The words hypnotism, hypnosis, and hypnotherapy are often used to refer to the same phenomena, although there can be some distinctions in meaning depending upon the context of use. These words are all referring to techniques that are applied to help or lead a person (or group of people) to shift one's state of consciousness and focus so that communication with the "subconscious" level of mind can be facilitated. Hypnosis and hypnotism are more general terms as they can refer to those methods being applied in any context, including for entertainment purposes or psychological persuasion or societal influencing purposes, not only for therapeutic purposes.Hypnotherapy refers to the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes, such as assisting with treatment for mental or physical health challenges. In order to provide hypnotherapy services as a professional working with the public a person may be legally required to have received certfication training from a state approved certfication provider. In the state of Florida a person can advertise or promote their services as a "hypnotist" if they practice hypnosis for non-therapeutic purposes. If that individual is also a state licensed medical professional then if the person has completed the minimum hours of certification training for hypnotherapy then the person may also describe themselves as a "hypnotherapist" and include hypnosis in their professional work providing treatment to people that would be seeking their services for which their medical license qualifies them to provide treatment. A layperson hypnotist in Florida and various other states would not be allowed to advertise as being a "hypnotherapist" due to that distinction in regards to providing treatment, i.e. therapy. They might still provide hypnosis in some therapeutic contexts but would be expected to be working in collaboration with and under supervision of a licensed medical professional to serve in that role.
A layperson hypnotist might offer hypnosis for stress management, personal development and personal growth, for improving habits or self-confidence, for professional skills or performance, or for spiritual exploration. In those contexts there can certainly be therapeutic effects that may occur, however the practitioner can't make medical claims about treating diagnosed health concerns. A licensed medical professional such as a doctor, dentist, psychologist, counselor, nurse, or clinical social worker could also use hypnosis as a modality in treating health concerns that their clients or patients present with. Laws governing the application of hypnosis and the terms used to advertise those services can vary by state or country.
